Updates, Shoes, Work of Art, Etc.

I’m currently in the process of updating my homepage. I added a few images I’d already finished several months ago but just now put up. I’d like to add a lot more without removing the stuff that is already up, so I’m designing and reconfiguring all of that now. In the meantime, I would like to let you know of a very cool opportunity. My friends have been trying to get me to do this for a while but I just wasn’t sure about how lucrative it would be, and I didn’t want to take much time away from painting. But with all the talk about Work of Art Season 2, now is a better time than ever so here it is:

Everyone who knows me knows I paint all the time, so naturally the clothes and shoes I work in get covered in paint.  Well over this past year I did a lot of drippy, expressionistic brushwork and paint throwing in conjunction with my realist technique, and while I was making one painting I got distracted by the beautiful colors dripping all over my boots (see photo 1). I decided to just go with it “alla prima” and I loved the results. I would wear them to art events and people would just rave and say they’d pay all this money for them, but I never made them with the intention to market, I just made them because I thought they were cool and expressed my character. Then I decided to make another more streamlined pair  for some appearances I gave. Again, they got rave reviews. Finally, I made this awesome pair that got so many compliments I was told I’d be an idiot not to market them. (see photos 2 and 3)

So for about a month I’ve been trying to decide how to approach this. If there is enough of a demand, I’d like to order a few custom “Jaclyn Santos” designs — say, a classic pump, a ballet flat, and a boot — but I’d need to order the unpainted shoes in bulk and it’s expensive. So I am going to test the market (and all of you who told me you’d actually buy a pair) by beginning with a service rather than a “good”.  Right now, for the awesome price of $250 (return shipping included) I will paint a pair of custom shoes for you. All you have to do is deliver any pair of shoes to my studio; they can be brand new of totally worn down. I will make them look even better than new. For an extra fee, I will even have the soles and heels repaired at cost. I think this is an incredible deal and if/when I have my own prototypes made, the cost will triple. So now is the time to buy them! Plus, it’s eco-friendly :)

What’s great about these shoes is they are like jewelry for your feet. They are perfect for dressing up jeans or wearing with a little black dress. I guarantee you’ll get more compliments than you have on any shoes you’ve ever owned.

I know many of my fans would like to buy paintings but can’t afford to at the moment. While these aren’t paintings, this is a great way to own something hand made and completely original by me.  Every pair I make is painted “allaprima” or “in one sitting”. There are no patterns, so no two pairs will ever be the same. I will use only the finest leather stains and enamels on the shoes, so you won’t have to worry about the paint chipping – it won’t.

If interested, please email either at  jaclyn.santos@yahoo.com or allaprimashoes@gmail.com with the subject “request for order form” and I will contact you right away with further instructions. Also, direct any other questions to those emails. Finally, if you happen to be a size 7, I have two really cool pairs available in my store. (click here). There are several smaller paintings, prints and drawings also available.

Thanks xo

News and Updates

May 20th, 2011

I haven’t been able to update my blog for sometime because I had coding issues, but finally had some time to call technical support and straighten everything out :) I am finally able to post again! Anyway, thank you so much to all the people who came to my Art talk on Wednesday, it was really wonderful to see you there.  In case you haven’t received a personal invitation and are in the New York area, I will be holding an open studio event this weekend as part of Long Island City open studio weekend. Come visit me and hundreds of other artists! My studio will be open Saturday and Sunday from 12:00pm – 6:00pm and is located at 43-01 22nd street, studio 305, Long Island City, NY 11101

If you are in California, you can see my work in “Breach of Privacy” a group exhibition, at the Carmichael Gallery, 5795 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA, opening this Saturday at 6pm.  Two of my paintings will be on display. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend the opening but it should be a really good show. Here is an excerpt from the press release:

“Life is filled with glimpses of private moments and the artists in Breach of Privacy capture these experiences of curiosity, attraction and idleness by employing various forms of visual realism to depict a fleeting instance in their subjects’ lives and create a non-linear narrative in which the viewer is encouraged to be complicit. In their fluctuation between delicacy and darkness, the works of art both reference the poignant beauty implicit in the nature of voyeurism and brazenly confront the societal mores that condemn the shameful exhilaration such an act can provoke in the human being’s mind and body.”

Studio Photo Shoot

February 14th, 2011
To celebrate Valentines day and in anticipation of the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition 2011 out tomorrow, here are some images from a quick photo shoot I did the other day with talented photographer Jesse Untracht-Oakner. I am not in the 2011 edition but why not take some pictures… since I always just paint in a bikini anyway ;)
See more of Jesse’s photography on his website: juophoto.com or his blog.
Thank you Jesse!

The Story Behind the Art

February 11th, 2011

Picasso's Painting, La Lecture (The Reading)

Yesterday’s  News: A Bidding War over a Picasso Paining ended with a sale of about $40.2 million — approximately double the price it was estimated to earn.

“A heated competition between bidders ended with Pablo Picasso’s La Lecture soaring past expectations and fetching more than $40 million in London…The 1932 portrait of Picasso’s young lover and muse Marie-Thérèse Walter sparked a brief bidding war between seven interested buyers at Sotheby’s impressionist and modern art sale on Tuesday evening.”

Reading this, I couldn’t help but recall the story behind this painting and tragedy of Marie-Thérèse Walter’s life.

The painting led to the break up of Picasso’s marriage to his first wife  Olga Khokhlova after she saw it at a retrospective exhibition and realised that the facial features were not her own. Marie-Thérèse lived in the vain hope that Picasso would one day marry her, and hanged herself four years after Picasso’s death.  (source: wikipedia)

Despite (or maybe because of) the tragedy that plagued much of Picasso’s life, he seemed to channel everything into his Artwork — which was often brilliant.

I also thought of the last novel I read, “An Object of Beauty,” by Steve Martin. I won’t review the book, but it was intriguing to learn more about a side of the art world I usually don’t see: the behind-the-scenes activity in auction houses. I have attended a few auctions but never as a buyer. I also frequent galleries, but, like most artists, just to view the artwork or show my own work. So to borrow from Steve Martin’s book, I have difficulty seeing Art, or,  ”objects of beauty,” as “objects of value.”  I just enjoy experiencing the work! That’s not to say I can’t easily spot a “highly valuable” work of art, but there is a certain level of knowledge –particularly about the secondary market — that is necessary to really understand what makes one painting worth many millions more than another.  I am affiliated with ArtScouttv.com which produces videos that showcase the Art and Design world, and there is a great video of Art Basel with Michelle Rosenfeld, an art expert and gallerist who has an extensive knowledge of these particularities. Michelle can approach just about any artwork by any important artist and tell you during what period of the Artist’s career it was produced, the approximate market value, the amount it has appreciated of over the years, and what factors might make the artwork more or less valuable. Check it out here. I give a tour of Art Basel as well, but from the standpoint of a working artist; for instance, we conveniently found a Jeff Koons painting I helped paint when I worked for him. Watch my video here.

Back to the novel, the main character of the book is fictitious, although based on an ambitious, young gallerist Steve Martin personally knew. He is an Art collector with an impressive knowledge of Art History and Theory.  She began her career at Sotheby’s in New York, and worked her way up. During her rise to the top, she decided to anonymously auction a painting she’d (essentially) inherited. Since she worked at the auction house, she knew the maximum amount a collector was willing to bid (this number is recorded for estimates) and had a friend counter-bid via phone to drive up the price by hundreds of thousands.

La Lecture Being Auctioned

Katy Perry’s Artistic Touch

February 10th, 2011

Can you guess which hand belongs to the Visual Artist and which one belongs to the Recording Artist?

In case it’s not obvious, the first hand  belongs to Katy Perry, who loves to tweet photos of her amazing manicures which are essentially “nail art.”  Likewise, I indulge in my status as a trendsetter, which is certainly evident by my elegant and chic manicure.

Here’s how to get this look yourself — Mine, not Katy’s :)

1. Remove all nail polish and file nails as short as possible.

2. Purchase several colors of oil paint. The more colors embedded in the grooves of the nails, the more authentic the look. BLACK is an essential color.

3. Set up a canvas and easel and begin painting. Really go at it. To ensure that the paint does in fact end up on the nails, paint as long as possible, a minimum of 10 hours. Sure, you could cheat and apply the paint directly to your nails, but that wouldn’t be fun.

Voila! That’s how you get an authentic Artist’s manicure.  Ladies, this is always a real winner with the guys. ;)

Seriously though, I do ♥♥♥♥ Katy’s manicures. I also ♥ her music and the fact that she truly does appreciate Fine Art, as I’m sure most of you know by now. She commissioned oil painter and Work of Art guest judge Will Cotton to paint a portrait of her for her Teenage Dream album cover. She also hired him to direct her “California Gurls” video.
